Fine art photographer and high fashion visionary Cathleen Naundorf gained exclusive access to the CHANEL Haute Couture archives to capture haute couture ensembles in cinematic settings. Her shots exude exoticism, surrealism, elegance and mystery, creating a timeless aesthetic. It was an absolute dream project to work with the legendary house CHANEL, and it was quite a challenge for me as a photographer to interpret Coco Chanel’s and Karl’s visions into my own photographic style.

Your mise-en-scenes incorporate historical, cultural, architectural and floral references. There’s a great deal of research behind your creative process…

Usually, I spend a lot of time preparing for all my photoshoots and I draw my visions in storyboards and diaries, a small selection of which we published the first time in this book. I could freely direct photo productions and develop my artistic and dramatic aspects.

I explained every photo shot sequence in detail, gave instructions for lightning, set design and each move of my cast and technical crew. It was quite an adventure and a very exciting time.

I divided the book into 15 different subjects like “rue Cambon”, “Grand Palais”, “Future Couture” and I finished the book with “Imperium Chanel”. The setting on “Coco on Travel” and “Imperium Chanel” was something very special. I wallpapered the entire place Vendôme where Coco Chanel opened her first boutique, et voilà, a beautiful series of Coco’s Parisian life was created.

It must feel like an otherworldly experience to photograph in the Grand Palais…

My photoshoots in the Grand Palais were an adventure, I’ve worked there for the past decade. I’ve photographed several times in this magnificent historical monument, which is for me the largest daylight studio in Paris. On top of this, I was able to photograph the Haute Couture Chanel collection on the roof, nothing could be more French than to see the Tricolour flag in the background.

Trabajar con la legendaria firma CHANEL ha sido un sueño hecho realidad, y fue todo un desafío para mí como fotógrafa interpretar la visión de Coco Chanel y la de Karl, con mi propio estilo fotográfico.

Tu puesta en escena incorpora referencias históricas, culturales, arquitectónicas y florales. Hay una gran cantidad de investigación detrás de tu proceso creative…

Suelo hacer muchos preparativos para mis sesiones de fotos y plasmo mi visión en storyboards y diarios, de los cuales hemos publicado, por primera vez, una pequeña selección en este libro. He podido dirigir con libertad las producciones fotográficas y desarrollar los aspectos artísticos y dramáticos.

He explicado con detalle cada secuencia de la sesión de fotos y di instrucciones para la iluminación, el diseño del set y para cada paso que debía dar mi equipo artístico y técnico. Ha sido toda una aventura, muy emocionante. He dividido el libro en 15 temas diferentes como “rue Cambon”, “Grand Palais”, “Future Couture” y lo he terminado con “Imperium Chanel”. El montaje de “Coco on Travel” e “Imperium Chanel” fue algo muy especial. Coloqué papel pintado por toda la plaza Vendôme, donde Coco Chanel abrió su primer boutique, et voilà, así pude crear una preciosa serie de imágenes de la vida parisina de Coco.

Hacer fotografías en el Grand Palais debe de ser una experiencia de otro mundo…

Mis sesiones de fotos en el Grand Palais fueron toda una aventura. He trabajado allí durante la última década. He tomado fotos en varias ocasiones en este magnífico monumento histórico y para mí es el estudio con luz natural más grande de París. Además, pude fotografiar la colección de Alta Costura de Chanel en la azotea. No hay nada más francés que ver la bandera tricolor de fondo.
