Quando le grandi visioni dell’haute couture stanno strette in uno scatto, l’artista tedesca Cathleen Naundorf le cattura in immagini di grande formato, quasi sospese nel tempo Come catturare il glamour colto e raffinato di creazioni che sono veri capolavori di maestria artigianale. Come rendere il senso autentico di abiti che vantano ore e ore di lavorazione minuziosa, maniacale quasi. Come esprimere il senso di una couture che è un’autentica passione, maturata nell’intimità di operosi atelier, custodi silenziosi di un senso dell’eccellenza a tratti poetico. Suggestioni, sensazioni, emozioni pure che necessitano di essere restituite senza artifici, ma con tutta l’anima, meglio se con immagini di grande formato come quelle realizzate dalla fotografa di Weissenfels, Cathleen Naundorf, rigorosamente con una camera Seardorff o Plaubel e su pellicola Polaroid. Osservando gli scatti dell’artista tedesca – formatasi alla scuola di un mostro sacro come Horst P. Horst, dopo un esordio nel fotogiornalismo “nomade” tra le culture native di Mongolia, Siberia e amazzonia – lo stupore ci assale e si viene come catapultati in un universo onirico, surreale, ricco di intriganti suggestioni che sposano l’estetica romantica di un mondo sospeso nel tempo. Visioni di una bellezza che sconfina nell’universo artistico mettendo in scena atmosfere pittoriche e dal gusto cinematografico, in un perfetto equilibrio di tinte sature e texture uniche ottenute con uno speciale procedimento di sviluppo. “È l’estetica di Irving Penn, di Fellini, del rinascimento e della pittura barocca che mi ha ispirato quando nel 2005 ho iniziato la mia serie di scatti di alta moda – spiega Cathleen Naundorf, che ha firmato il sofisticato volume Women of Singular Beauty. Chanel Haute Couture by Cathleen Naundorf (edito da Rizzoli) in uscita il prossimo 3 ottobre – ogni fotografia custodisce un racconto e alla fine si collezionano un’enormità di storie affascinanti piccole o grandi che siano”. E accade pure che le storie di moda, di alta moda, stiano strette in uno scatto. Meglio allora Polaroid formato large, destinate a scandire nel nuovo volume l’evoluzione della maison Chanel nei trentacinque anni di direzione creativa di Karl Lagerfeld. Scatti usciti dagli archivi della maison di rue Cambon, accompagnati dai testi di Jérôme Neutres, curatore d’arte nonché per molto tempo direttore del Grand Palais di Parigi, che restituiscono – divisi in quindici capitoli, ognuno per i luoghi simbolo della casa di moda – l’essenza di abiti maestosi ritratti in spettacolari location, dal Grand Palais al Louvre, all’Hotel Ritz, mettendo in valore la nobiltà dell’alta moda e di donne di singolare bellezza, muse e icone di Karl e Cathleen nel segno della doppia C.

When the great visions of haute couture struggle to fit into a shot, German artist Cathleen Naundorf captures them in large format images, almost suspended in time How to capture the cultured, refined glamour of these masterpieces of craftsmanship art? How to depict the authentic meaning of dresses that take hours and hours of painstaking, almost maniacal work? How to express the meaning of couture that is an authentic passion, built up behind the walls of ateliers in that mysterious, silent world of poetic excellence? Cathleen Naundorf, the photographer from Weissenfels, uses a Deardorff or Plaubel camera and Polaroid film to generate authentic, unadulterated suggestions, sensations and emotions on large format images. A mentee of Horst P. Horst following an early career in travel photography shooting native cultures in Mongolia, Siberia and the Amazon, the German artist’s shots catapult the observer into a dream-like, surreal universe packed with intriguing suggestions that embrace the romantic aesthetic of a world suspended in time. Visions of beauty bordering on art, using painterly, cinematographic atmospheres in a perfect balance of saturated colours and unique textures obtained through a special development process. “It was the aesthetic of Irving Penn, Fellini, the Renaissance and baroque painting that inspired me when I began my series of haute couture shots in 2005,” explains Cathleen Naundorf, who has created the sophisticated book Women of Singular Beauty. Chanel Haute Couture by Cathleen Naundorf (published by Rizzoli) released on 3 October this year. “Every photograph has a story behind it and in the end you collect an enormous number of fascinating stories”. Yet these high fashion stories sometimes struggle to fit into a shot. This is why the photographer uses large format images in her new book on the thirty-five-year reign of Karl Lagerfeld as Chanel creative director. Shots taken from the brand’s archives are accompanied by a text by Jérôme Neutres, art curator and director of the Grand Palais in Paris. Divided into fifteen chapters, each devoted to a symbolic place for the fashion house, the book reveals the essence of beautiful dresses shot in spectacular locations such as the Grand Palais, the Louvre and the Ritz Hotel, shining a light on the nobility of haute couture and its women of singular beauty, the muses and icons of Karl and Cathleen with the double C.
